Blues Outgunned by sublime Gunners

A brave performance from blues on Sunday but again nothing to show from it. Blues looked solid to start of with but once that first goal went in it was writing on the wall at Borehamwood .

It was difficult from the start with the returning Beth Mead and the Gunners team pressing to go 8 points clear of Chelsea .

The game started

Blues looked solid but with no support for Libby Smith, who worked her socks off yet again it was ominous. In the 13th a deflected shot from Wienroither, rattled off a defender and Marie Hourihan was called into action making an unbelievable save to tip it onto the post. It didn’t take long for Arsenal to take the lead from player of the match Rafaelle Souza. The corner came in and the Brazilian headed in, with nobody marking her as the ball looped in.  It was Rafaelle’s first goal for the Gunners, she will become a legend for them in years to come.

In the 32th history was made when Kym Little surged on, Miedema had a couple of opportunities, the first blocked, then after a Blackstenius shank slots in. That made it 100 collective goals and assists in the WSL for Miedema, the first player to do so. This is an amazing achievement and huge congratulations to Vivianne Miedema one of my favourite players in the WSL.

What about the 2nd half

Birmingham were looking at damage limitation in the second half although it was more of the same and Kim Little curled a beautiful shot that Marie Hourihan couldn’t get to that just went over the bar. Some of the frustration was left to see when Rebecca Holloway was shown a yellow clattering into Wienroither.

In the 68th minute Rafaelle Souza almost get her second goal of the game heading over from a Vivianne Miedema flick. In the 70th minute Wienrother, Little and Foord linked up but again the mighty Louise Quinn cleared the danger.

The pressure continued and the third goal came from the returning Beth Mead on the 71st minute with Catly overlapping and pulled it back to mead to score from a angle .

In the 76th minute Birmingham got a free-kick and there was chaos in the Arsenal defence. The ball came back across and under pressure from Smith Blues got a fully deserved goal to make it 3-1. The ladies continued to pile on the pressure and in the 82nd Minute Blues got another one from Lucy Quinn who stole in to chip over Zinsberger. The come back of all come back’s was on 3-2.

Blues continued to press looking to get the equalizer when Arsenal gave us a sucker punch. A lovely pass out the back from Walti and Foord took her time and placed it into the far corner to make it 4-2

To wrap up

Like everything about this season it was about what could have been. I feel that the board not backing these brave girls, (who make me proud to say i’m a Birmingham city women’s fan) has lead to the teams demise. This however has not just been this season but instead has cumulated over the past few seasons. I believe that Craig Gardner is working hard with Darren and the coaching team are working hard to ensure that we learn from mistakes made and will come back to the WSL by backing them in a competitive championship next season.

My player of the match for blues was Libby Smith worked her socks off and fully deserved her goal.
