BLUES RUN COMES TO THE END

Blues Women’s run in the F.A Cup has come to a end after the Seagulls made it to the semi finals. Yet again it was our ruthlessness that cost us, we hit the post and crossbar on 4 different occasions, a penalty that was never a penalty (more on that later on) and a corner that went straight into the back of the net. You need luck in cup competitions and Brighton got the rub of the green. It was great to see former Bluenoses Bri Visalli who looks the player that blues wish they had when she come to us a few season’s ago and of-course Veatriki Sarri came back to the ground where she scored that goal against Arsenal and looked like in her pre match interview she was happy to be back.

FIRST HALF

Blues started off really well in the first quarter of the game and could have scored as early has the tenth minute when Jade Pennock with some great play and found space hit the crossbar, Lucy Quinn’s follow up went over the bar. Then it was Siobhan Wilson’s turn two minutes later but her shot went wide.

Then it was Super Jade again but this time it was saved from Megan Walsh in the 15th minute. It was Brighton’s turn to turn up the heat in the 18th minute and fortunately Brighton’s midfielder Katie Robinsons shot went of the post hit Lucy Thomas and went out for a corner.

Brighton were getting the grip of the game when Victoria Williams header went just wide in the 24th minute. Two minutes later the seagulls took the lead when Poppy Pattinson scored directly from a corner which Ronaldinho would have been be proud of. Lucy Thomas tried but couldn’t keep it out 0-1 to the seagulls.

Then the big controversy of the game when former Bluenose Visalli was clipped in the box and the referee pointed to the spot. No one with Brighton complained when the experienced Danielle Carter cooly placed it past Lucy Thomas to make it 0-2.

Blues were looking to respond when Lucy Quinn shot went over the bar in the 38th minute. Blues continued playing out of the back was killing us and Danielle Carter could have made it a brace when she was clean through but strangely didn’t try to lob Lucy Thomas than try to pass it to another Brighton player.

BLUES 0-2 BRIGHTON

SECOND HALF

The first chance if the second half came for the seagulls when Katie Robinson shot was blocked by the Blues defence. Blues first chance was in the 49th minute was Pennocks shot that went over the bar. Then two minutes later Jade Pennock shot was off the bar again.

Then it was Charlie Estcourt shot this time that went over the bar in the 53rd minute. Two minute’s later blues had another chance from a Murray corner but it was headed wide from blues captain Louise Quinn.

In the 69th minute blues yet again hit the post for a 4th time. Ashley Hodsons fantastic volley came back off the post, it just wasn’t going to be Blues day.

The seagulls should have finished the game off but Katie Robinsons strike was saved by Thomas in the 70th minute.

Brightons last chance of the game was from Carter who’s shot was saved from Thomas .

Blues final chance came from super Jade Pennock with a shot on the turn but was brilliantly saved by Megan Walsh in the 87th minute.

FULL TIME BLUES 0-2 BRIGHTON

MY THOUGHTS ON THE GAME

In the cup you need a bit of luck and today the seagulls had the rub of the green. A goal direct from a corner and a dubious penalty from referee Emily Heaslip cost us. Blues though didn’t give up hitting the crossbar 4 times. You need to be ruthless and Jade could have got a hat-trick on any lanother day and Ashley could have got a unbelievable goal but it wasn’t meant to be.

REFEREEING IN THE WOMENS GAME

I said it in one of my other blogs that the standred of referee’s in the women’s game has yet again been disappointing. This is nothing against the official’s of todays game but what good is it to have part time referee’s and 4th officials’ from a F.A that wants the women’s game to be the best in the world. If the stubbornness of the F.A to not make the people in black full time is not sorted then it will hurt them. There are rumours that the FA want to bring a 4th official into the ladies gage as they do in Europe. If this was in place on Sunday then the penalty would not have stood.

POM

I have to go for a joint player of the match with Brighton’s goalkeeper Megan Walsh with that save from Pennock and Brianna Visalli finally showing her quality in the cup.

NEXT UP

Back to the league under the lights at St Andrews against Crystal Palace on Wednesday night at 7:00. Let’s support the ladies in royal blue after todays disappointment.
