From Harold Wilson to a draw at Sheffield

When Harold Wilson said the often repeated, “a week is a long time in politics” Blues were a lower middle 2nd Div. side. They were going nowhere and were nearer Div. III than one. 50 years on nothing has changed.

My wonderful Tilton Talk Show hosts were proud of the fact that they were so positive for the first time in ages. In football 48 hours is an eternity. From taking on the best side in the league and holding them in comfort we went to Middlesbrough who were having a bad enough run to sack the manager. They conceded a goal from a poorly taken corner in one of ‘Borough’s few shots on target and that was it. Away defeat no 3 and not a chance recorded to even scrape a point.

Good defending generally, nice build up play but no end product. Three strikers on view all over 30 who never had a look in. Quick fire passing by the young men of the defence and midfield which falls down in the top third of the pitch. Maybe the final ball is not good enough but with the old guys the pass has to be almost miraculous to find its target. We cannot win if we don’t score, and the Blues draw a blank too often. Much too often.

Three matches in 8 days which we will be doing certainly until the World Cup doesn’t help. Granddads army up front was terrific at Sheffield but by Wednesday they were shoddy to say the least. Saturday, we face Bristol City who will have played the same number of games as us. I only hope that John Eustace can lift the troops and get those older legs moving.

A good home win is desperately needed. The fans are tired of the condemned stadium which however the crowd get behind the Blues the atmosphere is dissipated by the 8000 covered seat and those present banished to the God’s.

The inspiration must come from the pitch. We have a decent squad. Chong, Hannibal, Bacuna. Longelo and have tons of talent and skills. Let’s encourage them to show off a bit. Show the St Andrews faithful what they really can do. Chong, we know will get kicked all over the shop, but they cannot kick all of them and we will surely one day get a ref who will show us a bit of mercy. Which reminds me that the foul on Hogan early in the game on Wednesday, when he was clear on goal should have been a Red card.

Changes will be needed on Saturday, Chong and Bielik started with knock at the Riverside. Time for Bellingham Mk2 to make a start perhaps. Somebody to get the fans off their seats please!
