Leko finally breaks his duck and its a SEVEN+ not from “Len” but from the “Chairman”

I have mixed feelings about Tuesday’s elimination from The EFL Cup at Norwich. My first reaction, as ever when we throw away the opportunity of Cup progress is why? Getting ‘minutes’ into players legs is frankly annoying. These guys train 4-5 days a week. Their fitness should be without question. Ah but its not the same as match play is the cry. Well bloody well make it like the real thing. Practice as you mean to play.

The side put out did Okay. The two goals were poor defensively but the overall 90mins deserved the 2-2 score line. The question is why were the more experienced players not whipped on the field to take penalties. The two ‘trialists’ Cosgrove and Leko took shocking penalties while Bacuna and Hogan looked on.

Johnathon Leko finally got his Birmingham account open. His record of 42 appearances 0 assists and 1 goal still says to me that the boy can’t play. I do not have any personal axe to grind with him. When he pulls on that Blues shirt, I want him to succeed. His goal was high quality of that there is no doubt but with a record of one goal every 42 games was it wise to expect him to score again inside the next hour?

Psychologically all the joy and relief that his goal, in terms of execution and value to the team was dissipated when his penalty was so woeful my Granny could have thrown her purse on it and saved it. He turned what should have been a match saving performance into a defeat. That in my opinion is bad management. The Kid sadly was poorly done by and now starts again to convince the doubters that he is up to the task.

We are on our foreign travels again this week as we cross the Severn Bridge to take on the best Wales has to offer in Cardiff City. Looking at the fledgling table shows them as the toughest opponents we have faced and our mixed record at their new, if unspectacular ground, puts it in the ‘tricky’ category.

We certainly are on an upward trajectory and although in terms of results John Eustace has not done any better that many of his predecessors, there is a feel that his approach has a bit more logical .and purposeful feeling to it.

Tuesday was a better approach than sending the youth team with an overweight goalie to Portsmouth. Our current Chairman of football Gary Gardener played in that. 3-0 to a third division outfit was poor management then and we are not as careless as we were then.

John Eustace has 7+/10 so far from ‘The Chairman’. The plus given to indicate that we are going in the right direction.
