Blues first defeat at St Andrews in the league came at the weekend against a really good Sunderland team. Mel Reay her and her team deserve all the credit , Blues on the another hand were not at the races. There was a massive positive about the game and that was Harriett Scott getting her 100th appearance for the Blues and the return of Martha Harris coming back from her injury.

FIRST HALF

Both sides were looking to carve out opportunities for one another in the first 15th minutes. former bluenose Emma Kelly whipped in a free kick but the blues defence dealt with it well

Blues first chance came in the 26th minute and was from a corner . The ball broke to Abi Cowie but her half volley went wide.

Then Sunderland almost took the lead when Emma Kelly’s freekick was spilled from Lucy Thomas but Danielle Brown’s header was held well in the 33th minute.

Then the break through came and was fully deserved Some brilliant work on the wing from Danielle Brown, she beat her marker and her brilliant ball into the box was headed home from Emily Scarr who headed in for 0-1.

A great response from Blues got them back level right away when Claudia Walker hooked the ball into the area and it was headed home by Jade Pennock in the 44th minute.

SECOND HALF

The first chance of the second half saw Sunderland retaking the lead when Liz Ejupi picked out Jessica Brown at the back post for her tap it home in the 55th minute.

12 minutes later it was three. Emma Kelly’s corner was whipped into the box and Grace McCarty headed the ball into the corner .

The last chance for Sunderland came in the 86th minute when Katy Watson found Emily Scarr but her shot went over the bar. Blues had one more chance with Jade Pennock who could have made it a brace for herself but it was well saved from Claudia Moan.

FULL TIME BLUES 1-3 SUNDERLAND

MY THOUGHTS

A lacklustre performance from the girls in royal blue. Yes we were bad but I want to give credit to Sunderland. They were everything we weren’t, hungry, determined and up front they were ruthless. Mel Reay and the girls should be very proud of this result they climbed up to 8th after this result and Blues dropped down to 5th a lot of work to do, lets hope their can get it right .

PLAYER OF THE MATCH

Danielle Brown a really clever player and her assist for Emily Scarr’s goal was class.
