A LITTLE BIT OF IRISH MAGIC FROM QUINN AND AGG SINKS THE SAINTS

Birmingham City Women go into the first international break top of the class and two points clear of Charlton Athletic goals from Lucy Quinn and the returning Lily Agg got Blues their first win at St Mary’s . It has been a great week for Quinny winning the September player of the month and scoring her third goal of the season, but it ended on a sour note Quinny was unable to continue in the 41st minute and was replaced by Ellie Mason. Amy made two changes from the win over Sheffield United bringing back into the squad Lily Agg and a first start from Friday night’s hero Simone Magill.

FIRST HALF

The first chance of the game came for the hosts when a long ball over the top for Dean but a great tackle from Rebecca Mckenna in  the area denied the forward.

Blues first chance of the game came for Lily Agg when her shot was saved by Fran Stenson.

But Blues took the lead in the 13th minute when a ball was played into the back post and Lucy Quinn head it in with a deflection from Megan Collett but Quinny will take it all day long for her third of the season .

The next chance of the game came for Rebecca Holloway whose left footed shot went over the bar in the 21st minute.

Then in the 30th minute Luicia Kendell carried the ball and hit a shot from outside the box, but it was superbly blocked from Louise Quinn.

Then in the 35th minute some great play from Tegan Mcgowen who laid it back for the hero from last week Simone Magill, but her shot was saved wonderfully from Fran Stenson who tipped it over the bar.

In the 41st minute the goal scorer Lucy Quinn couldn’t continue and was replaced with Ellie Mason.

SECOND HALF

The first chance of the second half was blues doubling the lead when Rebecca Mckenna found Lily Agg in the centre of the box and her shot went past a devasted Stenson to make it 0-2 for the women in blue in the 50th minute.

In the 67th minute it was Southampton’s turn to test Lucy Thomas when Aimee Palmer free kick was well saved from Thomas.

In the 79th minute Blues almost finished the game off when Apan’s free kick was only half cleared but it fell to Ivanna Fuso who catches her shot sweetly but hits the woodwork so unluckily.

Then Southampton should have pulled a goal back with Molly Pike with a close-range effort going over in the 82nd minute.

Then in the 83rd minute Fuso had another chance, but her shot was saved from Stenson in the centre of the box.

Then in the 84th minute substitute Cho So-Hyun right footed shot from the centre of the box was saved from Stenson.

Then a minute later Cho had another chance, but her header was high and wide .

Then in the last chance of the game came in the 88th minute for the saints when midfielder Rachel Rowe right footed shot was well saved from Lucy Thomas.

MY THOUGHTS ON THE GAME

A fully deserved victory down at the south coast for the women In blue yes at times we had to defend but overall a very professional performance from Amy and the girls. Amy has been a breath of fresh air since she has been here on and off the pitch meeting her on a couple of occasions, she gets what this club means to the fans, and she is hungry to succeed here at Blues what has impressed me about Amy she has made some tough decisions not all popular with all the blues fans letting go Jade Pennock & Charlie Devlin especially Jade with her record in this league and i was gutted that she went. But what she has done has brought in some players who i been calling out for in previous season with some young legs in like Ashanti Akpan Ava Baker & Tegan Mcgowen is one thing but also got hard workers in there like Neve Herron and someone who doesn’t get the credit she deserves is Rebecca Mckenna getting her second assists of the season today. Also, another thing which has been impressive is the goals conceded tally only letting in two goals in in are first seven games really impressive. The only downside of today’s game was the injury of Quinny before half time hopefully it’s not too serious. But the future is bright on and off the pitch for the girls and hopefully this is the season we can cross the line.

MY PLAYER OF THE MATCH

I have to go for Rebecca Mckenna she is someone who doesn’t get the credit she deserves but gives her all since her arrival from Charlton this season and getting her second assists of the season setting up Lily Agg to kill the game off.

UP NEXT

Like I said it’s international break, but we are back at St Andrews @Knighthead Park on the third of November against newly promoted Newcastle United a 14:00 kick off time.

Thanks Stephen for your blog on Southampton v Blues Women.
I really appreciated this and was fortunate to attend this match by travelling on the official supporters coach.
A great game despite the inclement weather. KRO!
