back to back defeats in the conti cup

Garrison Coffee Company sponsors Tilton Talks coverage of Blues Women

Blues suffer back to back defeats in the Conti Cup and are out finishing bottom of the group this afternoon and a sour taste for the end of 2022 former bluenose Sarah Ewen’s double gave the victory for the team down south and to be fair their fully deserved it .

The one positive out of today’s game  was a start for Lily Simkin and also played the full 90 minutes  which is brilliant after what she’s been through  back to back ACL injuries a huge moment for her and her family .

FIRST HALF

The first chance was for blues in the 11th minute when Charlie Devlin played a brilliant ball to Wilson but she dragged her shot wide .

London City’s first chance came in the 16th minute when Lois Joel shot went over the bar.

And minute later the breakthrough should have came for the Lionesses when former bluenose and my player of the match Sarah Ewen’s broke the offside trap but seen her half volley just went past the post in the 17th minute.

Then it was Blues chance when Siobhan Wilson free kick which was saved from debutant Hermione Cull in the 23rd minute .

Then Cull was called into action again with a brilliant reaction save from a free kick blues a minute later .

Then it was London City’s turn to take the lead from a corner when Lucy Shepherd drilled a low ball in the penalty area  Karin Moya got to the ball but was saved from Lucy Thomas in the 27th minute .

Then in the 40th minute blues almost took a unlucky lead when Scottish maestro Christie Murray took a corner and a deflection of a London City player hit the crossbar.

Then three minutes later blues took the lead from a free kick that was played into the box and Lucy Quinn redirect her header on a London City player to give blues a unlucky lead.

HALF TIME BLUES 1-0 LONDON CITY LIONESSES 0

Blues needed to start well in the second half but it was far from it when former bluenose Sarah Ewen’s comes back to hunt us with a low shot in off the post and fully deserved to get back into the game. 1-1

London City up the game in the second half and in the 64th minute a London City should have been in front but a fantastic double save from Lucy Thomas from Lily Agg kept it 1-1.

London City like in the first game where on top and almost got into the lead when Lois Heuchan played a wonderful ball to Lily Agg but a last minute challenged kept it 1-1 in the 81st minute .

Blues looked like there where going to get away from it but Sarah Ewen’s made it a brace for herself and got London City the win  and there fully deserved it to .

FULL TIME BLUES 1-2 LONDON CITY LIONESSES

MY THOUGHTS

A disappointing end to 2022 for the girls in royal blue London City deserve it with amount of shots on target 10 compare to us with only two . Melissa Phillips yet again has done a super to beat us even though we went 1-0 up you always feel that the Lionesses will get back into the game . The second half performance was really disappointing and if it wasn’t for Lucy Thomas it could have been worse the need to get this team playing for the whole 90 minutes not just 10 minutes here 20 minutes their we need to be consistent like the Sunderland game a huge second half of the season for Darren & Jo to get us back in the WSL . Next up is a F.A CUP game against Huddersfield Town on the 8th of January .

PLAYER OF THE MATCH

Have to go for Sarah Ewen’s her two goes were the difference between the two sides it was a crying shame that she never got the opportunity  at Blues cause we really could have a gem especially in this league Melissa has got he best out of her .

Hope you guys have a wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year .
