BLUES WOMEN STAY ON TOP AS THERE SINK POMPEY

Blues have started of 2025 in style by beating Portsmouth Women 1-3 at Westleigh Park. Goals from Ava Baker, Ellie Mason & Cho So-Hyun got Amy’s girls in blue the victory to stay at the summit. After London City Lionesses victory over Bristol City at Ashton Gate on Sunday this win was so important and also we got a better goal difference of a five goals which is great to see.  Amy gave Ava Baker her first league start with Ellie Mason and Ashanti Akpan back in the squad also Lucy Quinn was back on the bench.

FIRST HALF

The first chance of the game came for the host when Lily Dent was one on one with Thomas denied her in the 13th minute.

Blues first chance of the game came two minutes later when Lee cuts in onto her right and found Ava Baker whose shot was well saved from debutant Hannah Poulter.

Then the breakthrough came when Ava chased down Hannah Poulter and her clearance rebounded of Ava into the net in the 23rd minute .

SECOND HALF

The first chance of the second half was Blues doubling the lead when Portsmouth couldn’t clear a Blues corner, and Ellie Mason hooks it into the far corner pass Hannah Poulter.

And it could have been three two minutes later when another corner wasn’t cleared away from the Pompey defence and Yuri’s effort rebounded off the crossbar.

Then in the 60th another big save from Lucy Thomas when Emma Jones raced through on goal but was denied.

Then in the 86th minute Pompey got a goal back with some great play from Annie Hutchings who founds Sophie Quirk who cut inside and found the top corner of the net a great goal.

But straight away Blues restored there two goal lead when a Martha Harris cross was brought down by Cho So-Hyun and her strike finds the bottom corner a brilliant response from Amy’s girls.

The last chance of the game came for the hosts when Sophie Quirk squared the ball back to Emma Thompson whose shot on the turn just went wide.

MY THOUGHTS ON THE GAME

A professional performance from Amy and the girls like I said in my preview these games worry especially at the beginning of last year when we went to Watford and lost 0-2 but today, we deserved are three points and when there pulled a goal back from Sophie Quirk  you would have thought we would sit back but this team has got a new identity under Amy  she wants them to be ruthless like what we seen at the beginning of the season. And today we seen it again it was great to see Ellie Mason back in the starting line up along with Ava Baker and Ashanti Akpan which all of them have to be patient but there final got the chances today and boy did there take them. Especially Ava Baker which her opportunities have been limited but her first start in the league and gets her first goal in the league to a very proud moment or her. And another positive that Lucy Quinn was on the bench today and came one for Choe Yuri. Of course, the weekend was overshadowed of the news of the injury to the brilliant Lily Agg who is out for the season with an ACL injury has we all know Lily has been one of the brightest sparks since we got her on a free transfer from London City Lionesses last season she always gives her all on and off the pitch and always gives her time for the fans. From me and everyone at The Tilton Talk Show we wish Lily a speedy recovery and hope to see her back at St Andrews @Knightheadpark very soon.

MY PLAYER OF THE MATCH

I have to go for Ava Baker she has been brilliant for us when she has had the opportunity and fully deserves her chance in the starting line-up today and her hard work got her that goal.

UP NEXT

We are back home next week at St Andrews @Knightheadpark for a top of the table clash against Stephen Kirby’s Bristol City side who are looking for a reaction after their 0-1 defeat to London City Lionesses.

It would be brilliant if we could get some more fans down there next Sunday to support the girls and continue are push back into the WSL.
