HERRON & MAGILL TO THE RESCUE TO PUT BLUES ON TOP OF THE LEAGUE

A battle at the lane and no I’m not talking about West Brom V Sheffield United on a Friday night. Blues ground out a 1-2 win over a Sheffield United side looking for their first win under Ash Thompson and if they want to stay up they have to show the kind of fight & determination that was shown Friday then they will be fine.

For Blues it was about grinding it out and getting away from the Lane with all three points. These three points could be crucial in getting back into the WSL yes it wasn’t the games like before winning 4-0 last year but it is a win and that’s all that Blues fans care about. Amy made two changes from the win against Blackburn she brought back in Christie Harrison-Murray & Lucy Quinn.

FIRST HALF

The first chance of the game was the opening goal for Blues a Christie Harrison-Murray corner was flicked home from Neve Herron for her first for the club.

Then in the 10th minute Blues could have doubled the lead when Ashanti Akpan shot just missed the top corner so unlucky.

In the 13th minute another chance for Blues when Tegan Mcgowen found Lee who then found Lucy Quinn, but her low shot was blocked by Lafayette.

Then in the 18th the first chance for Sheffield United with some good work from Eva Butler who forced a corner but it was headed away from Lucy Quinn.

Sheffield United were finally getting back into the game and in the 24th minute with a moment of brilliance from Ellen Molloy who went past three defenders and fired it into the bottom corner a wonderful goal.

Lucy Thomas’s lofted ball found Tegan Mcgowen in 31st minute but her shot just went wide of the far corner.

The last chance of the first half came for the host’s when former Lewes player Maria Farrugia cut inside the left hand side but her shot was easily clamed from Lucy Thomas.

SECOND HALF

Blues started the second half on the front foot when Simone Magill found Ivanna Fuso but her shot was tipped behind by Sian Rodgers for a corner in the 57th minute.

Then in the 71st minute United were so close to have taken the lead when Eva Butler seen her shot deflected just passed the post.

In the 82nd minute Blues were awarded a penalty after a foul on Louise Quinn in the box and substitute Simone Magill scored past Rogers to make it 1-2 for the girls in blue.

But right at the death Shefield United could have got a equalizer with Ellen Molloy getting her second of the game but her shot was straight at Lucy Thomas.

MY THOUGHTS ON THE GAME

Blues needed some luck to get a hard-earned victory but overall I think we deserved it with the stats of the game. It was great to see Neve & Simone getting their first goals for the club and getting our first away win of the season. Yes, at times it won’t be pretty but who cares it’s about winning football matches and trying to get back into the WSL and if we there at the end of the season nobody will complain. Huge credit to Tegan Mcgowen, her work rate since she has come to the club is unreal and I think she will be player of the season at the awards next year. The only negative about Tegan that she needs to get goals in her game once that first one goals in then i think she can get into double figures this season.

MY PLAYER OF THE MATCH

I have to go for Neve Herron since she has come to Blues, from Sunderland she has been a rock always gives her all in a Blues shirt her quality on and off the ball is amazing and fully deserved her goal on Friday night.

UP NEXT

Another away trip this time we going to former player Remi Allen’s Southampton side 14:00kick off time.

    Thanks for your blog Stephen
Went with other members of Women’s OSC to Sheffield on official coach on Friday evening. Great to see Neve and Simone get their first goals for Blues Women. With a bit more luck Blues Women could have got more but that would have been harsh in Sheffield Women who pressed hard against Blues.
    Onto Southampton away next.
