20 years in WSL ends in Relegation – But we will be back

Birmingham City one of the founding members of the WSL were relegated on Wednesday evening after a 6-0 defeat by Manchester City.
It was all City from start to finish the players the commitment the belief that could chase down Manchester United in 4th place. The 1st half passed quickly and Blues had defended really well (how many times have I said that). The saying of a a game of two halves though springs to mind. Early in the 2nd half we conceded and the flood gates then opened up.
The first goal come in the 58th minute when the brilliant Georgia Stanways right footed shot from outside the box went in the bottom left hand corner. 3 minutes later Lauren Hemps left footed shot from very close range made it two. City were rampant at this stage and were taking no mercy on a Blues team that have a lot of heart and passion, Georgia Stanway got her second goal and third of the game with a left footed shot from very close range to the bottom left corner.
The pressure continued and in the 76th minute Alanna Kennedy made it 4 with a header from the right side of the six yard box to the bottom left corner. This was followed by a Right footed shot from the centre of the goal by Chloe Kelly which made it 5. At this point you could see the hurt in all of the Blues ladies eyes but they continued.
Then the last of the goals came in the 87th minute when Laura Coombs from outside the box went in .
The last chance came for Filippa Angeldahl with a great shot that hits the bar from outside the box in the 92nd minute .
When you look back across the season there are many attributing factors that have ked to this. Lack of investment by the board, Managers coming and going, injuries to key players and as with the men’s game the standard of officiating leaving alot to be desired.
Things need a massive shake up for us to get out of the championship it took Liverpool a few years to get out of their last years relegation team Bristol city didn’t get back so if people thing its going to be a easy road then think again.
We will be back and if as I said in my last blog we can maintain the nucleus of our existing team along with the passion and drive that has been shown by the ladies then that will be sooner rather than later
Sad seeing what this board is doing to this club. BCLFC were winning the FA cup and playing in the Champions league not long ago. The exact same thing is happening to the men’s team.
A great and honest assessment again Stephen. I feel for the ladies who have battled against the odds this season with ambition and drive. I hope the nucleus of this team stay with Blues Ladies next season and give themselves an opportunity to show the other teams how good they really are.
The season’s not over yet and redemption of pride can be achieved with victory over Villa Ladies and their former coach. KRO.
